WHAT IS A JPEG? JPEGs use smart compression to make file sizes smaller.  This compression is heavier in color than clarity, making it perfect for consumer and general viewing.

WHAT IS A TIFF?   TIFFs are lossless compression files . Resulting in high quality  large file images. When a TIFF  image is edited and saved, no loss of data occurs, making this format perfect for publication and archives.

Film Type Deterioration  |  Why its important to digitise now!

All formats of film types deteriorate due to either age or fluctuating temperatures; which include leaving film in garages, lofts or basements.  Once the deterioration process starts, you will notice stipling and curling on the film types, blemishes which look like dirt spots or spider veins.

WATER, FIRE DAMAGED, BENT, WARPED OR SCRATCHED EMULSION DAMAGED, DIRTY, MOLDY, FADED, DARK, POOR COLOUR, EXPOSURE OR OLD SLIDES.

For consumer and publication film types, we use a combination of techniques to remove surface defects (iSRD) before reconstructing the colour (ACR). The final process is grain equilisation management. The software removes surface defects and restores colour to faded slides.  Each machine adheres to The National Archives Standards, ensuring focus, colour management and lighting are automatically calibrated.

We run each image through Silverfast Archive iSRD.  The ACR Adaptive Color Restoration, refreshes faded colors and normalises oversaturated colours The programe removes most of the dust and film scratches, correct for the effects of film grain, and restore faded color and correct shading in shadow areas of the image.

Archival photographic film types are prepared TIFF RAW for heritage preservation. Additional asset JPEG files can be prepared with the above restoration processes.
