HIGH QUALITY ARCHIVING AND PRESERVATION OF YOUR VIDEO TAPES

We offer video tape digitising, archiving and preservation for individuals, institutions and archives in Oxfordshire and the UK. Working with video has its many complications. Our computers and conversion systems are robust and perfectly able to handle large data throughput. We are experienced in handling fragile and deteriorating videos and can support the baking of tapes.

ProRes is a line of intermediate codecs, which means they are intended for use during video editing, and not for practical end-user viewing. The benefit of an intermediate codec is that it retains higher quality than end-user codecs while still requiring much less expensive disk systems compared to uncompressed video. It is comparable to Avid's DNxHD codec or CineForm which offer similar bitrates and are also intended to be used as intermediate codecs. ProRes 422 is a DCT-based intra-frame-only codec and is therefore simpler to decode than distribution-oriented formats like H.264. In 2018 Apple added a new "ProRes RAW" (compressed Bayer filter) to Final Cut Pro X, after Blackmagic Design implemented compressed Bayer as "CinemaDNG 3:1" and "CinemaDNG 4:1" in their cameras and Da Vinci Resolve.

THE IMPORTANCE OF UNDERSTANDING VIDEO TAPE AND FORMATS

  • Acetate (1950s-1970s): tape base that deteriorates over time by drying out. The tape will be very brittle and may have a distinct smell of vinegar; the breakdown of the acetate is often referred to as vinegar syndrome.
  • PVC (1950s-early 1970s): inexpensive plastic tape base that was not widely used.
  • Polyester (early 1950s-present): also referred to as Mylar or PET. Chemically stable tape base that became the norm for videotape manufacturing by the 1970s.
